General Guinea Pig Care
Housing:
- 10+ square feet for two guinea pigs (5' x 2' cage)
- C&C cages or large enclosures work best
- Bedding: fleece liners or paper-based bedding (no cedar or pine)
- Hide houses, tunnels, and enrichment items
- Room temperature between 65-80°F
Diet:
- Unlimited timothy hay (80% of diet)
- 1/8 cup quality guinea pig pellets daily
- 1 cup fresh vegetables daily (romaine, bell peppers, cilantro, cucumber)
- Fresh water available at all times
- Occasional fruit treats (small amounts)
Health Care:
- Monthly nail trims (can use a cat nail trimmer)
- Texel breed specific: Monthly fur trimming around the belly and feet.
- Average lifespan: 5-7 years with proper care
Social Needs:
- Guinea pigs are highly social and do best in pairs or groups
- Same-gender pairs or neutered male with females work well
- Daily interaction and handling will help your guinea pig stay social
